Here at Epic, we’re proud of the range of WW2 products we have on offer. In particular, we have an impressive stock of insignia and patches. This week, we’ll be looking at a couple of our favourite US WW2 division patches to whet your appetite for the rest of our collection.
Undoubtedly some of the most famous divisions of WW2 are the 101st and 82nd Airborne. Although both divisions already existed during WW1, it was their performance in WW2 which made them legendary. The 82nd was reorganised as an Airborne Division on 15 August 1942, making it the first such division in the US Army. It’s insignia featured the new ‘Airborne’ tab, marking it out as an elite formation. The double ‘A’ stood for ‘All American’, reflecting the fact that its soldiers came from all corners of the USA. After months of rigorous training, the division first saw combat in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The 82nd later took part in the D-Day airborne landings, Operation Market Garden and fought courageously during the Battle of the Bulge. By the end of the war, the 82nd had established itself as one of the US Army’s most experienced and decorated divisions.
The 101st Airborne Division was created a day after the 82nd and undertook the same training. It’s patch features the head of an eagle and the distinctive ‘Airborne’ tab. The division was given the nickname ‘Screaming Eagles’, a name that has become universally known in military history. The division deployed to England to prepare for D-Day. The 101st also participated in Market Garden and was encircled by German forces at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Nevertheless, the division held out and was eventually relieved. By May 1945, the 101st had achieved legendary status and its distinctive ‘Screaming Eagle’ had become internationally recognisable.
The 101st and 82nd Airborne Division patches are just two of the great range of WW2 US division patches we have in our range. To see all of them, head over to the section on our website.
